It's funny. I'm not religious, but I think it is terrible how some atheists push their beliefs harder than the people they protest. I mean, who knows if there is more than us just flying through space on a giant rock.
Hm ... thing is that atheism isn't a belief system. This is where the whole debate goes off track. And atheists don't have a problem with agnostics like you :0). We don't even have a problem with people who privately believe in ... anything. The problem is with the standing of religion in the world. That a pixie book guides politicians' moves or whole populations' preferences. It is absurd. We accept that nations are torn apart by religion, but would we accept if they were torn apart by, say ... a belief in Santa Claus? :0) Have a great Saturday. Peace and love
Thats pretty funny. I'm also not religious and I think its terrible how religion is so pervasive in society. It disrupts peoples happiness and is a serious concern when blind faith of parents is putting an ill childs life at risk.
then it should be no problem for you to produce a youtube video of the next atheist that comes knocking on your door trying to convert you or to simply name a war that was waged by atheists for the sake of atheism in order to convert those that do not share the same belief.
I fucking know, and your a wank!and atheists don't push their beliefs harder than christians. We don't care what you choose to believe in just leave us the fuck alone with your bullshit
Posting stuff on the internet isn't "pushing". As opposed to what the religious do through government, education etc
No, atheists don't push their beliefs any harder than Christians. They just do it more militantly because they're not held to any "moral code" of being kind to each other.I'm an ex-Christian, but get completely turned off to the atheist movement because I've yet to meet one that didn't seem to have some kind of deeply set anger or resentment for Christianity specifically. Resulting in just vulgar name calling because they know thats a level Christians wont go to, to defend themselves.I think it's okay whatever you believe. You can't say "I believe what i believe, so they're ALL wrong and I'm right." Unless you have a history in being perfect. I don't believe in giving reparations to black people, and I don't believe most Christians should have to apologize for the actions of their ancestors either. The world sucks some time, get over it, and live your own life. So, while it's nice you don't believe in anything... thats fine and all... I just think you'd get a lot better response if you weren't all "Become an atheist, because we hate christians!"there's my two cents.
I just find it amusing to see how scared Atheist are of Christians. Why do we Christians get so much flak if we are just believing in a non existent entity? True Christians don't push their belief on anyone. They live their belief and wait for people to notice. If someone has a question, we answer it to the best of our ability or try to refer them to a preacher or elder of the church that might be able to help further. Christians who live by The Word, the Bible, in fact understand that nobody converts anyone. God converts people. God is the one that works in their life to help them. A Christian lives their life by the word of God, and in doing so, the Lord works through them and with them to help in others lives. Don't forget, being religious doesn't mean you are a Christian. A full blown Atheist is just as religious in his belief as a full blown Christian is in his. If you have more questions feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org I'll try to respond as soon as possible.
I am sorry Daniel Hartman, if you are a true christian you should knwo these by heart:Matthew 28:18-20Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.Markus 16:15-16Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 13:1010 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.I mean com'on that is the heart of Christianity, without it we wouldnt have so many churches around... it is the "Great Commission"Religions in general try to make others believe in their belief system because they are "helping" humanity, and if you dont believe in what they believe you are "wrong" to the point that they "help" in killing each other over which is the correct interpretation of their book that was "written by God" but obscure enough that not even the most intelligent humans find it logic how a "loving" saids "kill em all" so easily... and dont tell me that they are enemies of god since "all of us are his children and his creation" and that means that god is killing his children.... literally... maybe just for pleasure or entertainment.
Atheist have good reasons to fear not only christians, but all theists. They have been hunted down and slaughtered for centuries for the greater glory of some god or other. I like to think we're evolving out of being at the mercy of some bronze age propaganda.
Well, that's hilarious. As a Christian I laugh harder because there are so many labeled "christian" that do just that, put all their faith in a mindless book. one book to rule them all! It's far less complex and far more complex, a dichotomy that Atheism can never really attach themselves to
HippiePrincess: Disbelief IS a system of belief; otherwise, I agree with you.Anonymous below HippiePrincess: You're judging the whole by the fringes. There are extreme environmentalists who drink their own pee; you going to avoid going green? That being said, I take no stance in this argument. I'm an Absurdist at heart, and I believe that wasting your time arguing over whether or not there is a supreme being and whether or not you can discern his motives is silly.Go read a book or eat an apple or something productive.
There will always be some atheists who push their beliefs harder than the majority of the people who they are against. These people are necessary as are the people on the opposite side of the coin, this sparks and allows debate which is necessary for our own advancement. The argument should never be against peoples beliefs, more the institutions that pray (prey?) on them.
the reason which atheists may seem to have a more direct problem with christianity specifically (though I can only vouch for fellow US atheists) is the overwhelming influence it has over the political system, most specifically the way in which in manifests into a monopoly on morality. It's the one that gets rubbed in our faces the most.
RE: Mentions of Militant AtheismNumber of atheists committing atrocities, crimes against humanity, et cetera in the name of atheism throughout history would be exactly zero. (Don't try and sneak communism in there - communists committed atrocities in the name of communism)In order of popularity: Buddhists, Muslims, Christians... let's see your numbers. For militants we atheists sure seem to be lacking in the death tolls - aside from the occasional biblical allegory (and depending upon which version of the biblical texts/apocrypha you happen to believe to be "the true one") you won't find many people forced to decide between atheism and death.
If you find that little snarky remark to be too extreme, you should look into how the Romans treated the early Christians or how Christians have treated each other over the centuries. What has given us the environment where we can even have religios differences without it coming to blood very often? The ideas of a bunch of Deists from the Enlightenment did.Us doubters and skeptics and scoffers are what keeps the US and Europe from sinking back into another era of religious strife. Doubters scoffers and skeptics comprise a good deal of why we don't have Kings and civil wars over successions anymore.
atheism is a belief system hippie princess.... underlying everything there is a belief system and a set of definitions. what else do we use to form our opinions other than beliefs?
The problem is: Atheism IS in fact a belief system, because you believe there is no god. you can't know it. So in fact agnosticism is the only way to make a statement about god, without having any believe. Therefore Atheism is not as scientific as many think.
@daniel hartmanIf that's the case, I've only met one "true" christian. Everyone else seems to think that I'm going to hell just because I choose to believe in Goddess or not rather than "God"."If someone has a question, we answer it to the best of our ability or try to refer them to a preacher or elder of the church that might be able to help further."Five words: Hillsong, Southern USA, Pentacostal, Evangelical. Atheists ridicule religions like Christianity because they are ridiculous, they would be laughable if they didn't encourage such prejudice and increase divisions in the world. If Christians, Muslims, Jews etc. would try to view their archaic rituals and scriptures as an outsider looking in, they would see just how farcical it really is. I appreciate this is not easy to do when you have been brainwashed since childhood on your beliefs and you have the comfort of regularly communing with equally brainwashed individuals in a constant reinforcement of your views.Atheists constantly question and challenge beliefs and dogma, especially faith based beliefs, and people who blindly follow such faith based belief should realise that this questioning and challenging is a healthy thing to do.
Funny how atheists push their beliefs just as hard...Well no, think about why it's obvious. If you don't push back about as hard as some of those really extremist sects you get barreled over by them.Other Christians not so much because you just disagree about how extreme you need to be but atheists? The extreme guys can very easily turn a whole community of more normal folks against an atheist so we've got to push back against them ten times as strong because they've got all of you helping push.If you'd fight them for us (it's clear that what they do is flat out wrong if you think for a minute,) we'd calm down pretty quick. There would still be the angsty teenagers making a racket but they don't ever actually get anything down and rarely create anything (such as a one frame comic) about it.
@Daniel Hartman: You said 'Christians who live by The Word, the Bible, in fact understand that nobody converts anyone. God converts people. God is the one that works in their life to help them.'My question is, why is the all-perfect god himself so biased and unfair in that he 'saves' only those he 'favours' by 'converting' them, and then proceeds to sadistically let the rest of us rot in his 'eternal hell'?
i do not recognize those that claim my name.
I'm an atheist, but I don't resent Christianity or any other faith. I'm certainly not afraid of it either. Just as I'm entitled to my beliefs, other people are entitled to theirs. Not all religious people are zealots just looking to push their religion on others-- what right do we have to overgeneralize in this way? If the individual hasn't done anything intrusive, then turn the other cheek. You don't have to agree, but you don't have to be a dick about it either. I find it JUST as annoying when other atheists act all smug and rub their beliefs in other peoples faces as when religious fanatics rub their beliefs in MY face. It's just really, really uncalled for.
I am an atheist and I do resent religion. Most of the problems of the world are, and always have been, caused by religion. I have never met a religious person that was not a fool, a liar, or a hypocrite. Usually, they are all three at the same time.Even then, I would be content to leave them to their delusions if they would not attempt to force their insanity upon everyone else by force of law. Just practice your silly ideas and waste your lives and resources on them but leave the rational people alone.
