Big Buck Bunny

Big Buck Bunny from Blender Foundation on Vimeo.

Big Buck Bunny tells the story of a giant rabbit with a heart bigger than himself. When one sunny day three rodents rudely harass him, something snaps... and the rabbit ain't no bunny anymore! In the typical cartoon tradition he prepares the nasty rodents a comical revenge.

Rage Against the Machine Performs Acapella

After their attempt to take the stage was stopped by police, Rage Against the Machine took to the crowd with an acapella performance. Armed with only a megaphone, and thousands of fans, RATM played a 10min acapella set of Bulls on Parade and Killing in the Name of.

Rage for peace! I'm watching this video again and again and it once again helps to renew my faith in the youth of this country as peaceful, resilient, determined and unwavering in their stance against the war and their opinions of those who started this war.

Get a Life

Old concept, well executed, but all the same not thumb-worthy. The DM had a great disgusted grunt though! That got a few chuckles out of me, I must admit.

Clever Squirrel

Squirrels doing assault courses and climbing up vending machines. Don't ever discount the intelligence of a very hungry squirrel!

Huge smoke ring generator

One of the coolest things I have seen in awhile.

Amazing AUDIO illusion

They had a song like this on the never ending stairs in super mario 64. It always stumped me, and it's stumping me now.

Religious nuts in Texas seek to ban book about book banning

A girl and her father in Texas are trying to get the book "Fahrenheit 451" banned for containing "offensive material". Over sensitive, unreasonable, ignorant bible touting maniacs. Good thing they lost.

Cat does dog tricks

This is pretty impressive, since it's hard to train cats to do things.

Inverted pendulum

Whoa. Nice robotics demonstration there.

Senju Kannon

This is annual charity-dance in honour of the female Bodhisatva, Kuan-Yin. (a 'Bodhisatva' is a person who has achived Enlightenment, but instead of advancing into Nivana, choose to remain behind---to teach, and to be an example to the Unenlightened: that it *is* possible! As the Buddist Goddess of Mercy, Lady Kuan-Yin is depicted as having a thousand hands; all of them for giving---to others.

If you've ever owned a cat, you will definitely relate to this video

Heh, I still absolutely LOVE this video. Everything seems perfect to a T for cat owners - first, the toys and cat paraphernalia scattered everywhere, then the cat trying everything to get your attention while looking cute. LOVE IT!

How to wake your sleeping girlfriend

If anyone tried that on me, they'd be losing a couple of limbs. But, it's still pretty funny.

How to Make a Foxhole Radio

This guy is great! Neat little weekend projects you can do. This one is making a radio with some wire and paperclips.

John Stewart on Bill Moyers Journal

Two of my favorite thinkers/journalists, great conversation.

Sound Waves

Salt sound waves video. Fascinating, but watch out if you have pets around. By mid-point, my cats were looking around frantically and a moment later, they took off like bottle rockets. Then the sound gets so high that it hurts my ears. But it's neat to watch the salt. And the cats. Quite possibly the most awesome thing involving salt ever.

Presidential Candidate John McCains Nightmare Just Began

I'm John McCain and I approve this message. I'm John McCain and I forgot, I didn't approve that message. It was all lies! I'm John McCain and...what the hell was the message again? I'm quite old. No, wait. I'm not old. I'm young and I've always been young.

Demonstration of the Navy Electromagnetic Rail Gun prototype

The US Navy's Electromagnetic Rail Gun that is under development at NSWC Dahlgren in Virginia. This is a prototype to demonstrate the technology of the rail gun for use on the future DDG-1000 class of Navy ships. This clip is from the show FutureWeapons on the Discovery Channel. Wow! Mach 8! This is a Killing Machine! Too Scary the implications of a weapon like this!

Josh Blue, Q&A

Big kudos to Josh Blue for being in charge of his own life. There are a lot of people with challenges in life that don't even approach what he has to go through, who don't deal with them nearly as well.

How It's Made: Special Effects Make-up

This video makes quality special effects makeup look deceptively quick and easy. I'm guessing applying the finished product to the model might have taken 5 or 6 hours. Fascinating stuff.

The invisible world

Incredible footage and narration. Some sequences are almost "trippy". Highly recommended for educational purposes as well a visual stimulations.

The God Particle

A short documentary exploring the people and ideas behind the Large Hadron Collider.

Future of Civilization

Michio Kaku speaking of the future of our own civilization.

How to get height of a tall object in simple way

Do you remember studying trigonometry? If so, did you ever wonder that possible application it might ever have in your daily life? This little video is not going to salve the remembered pain or provide the key to the mystery of existence, but it will simply and amusingly demonstrate a real-world application of trig in a way that makes you wish all math instruction could be done so well.

Ricky Gervais Explains Creation

Ricky Gervais is my favorite! He is the co-creator and star of The Office (the real, British one) This is a video from his live show.

Super spiderweb

A community of spiders spinning a gigantic web covering huge oak trees. Hello, little fly and welcome to my palace. Stay a while. Stay forever.

Mind Control Cults

An experimental documentary parody of cults, cult leaders, and mind control. Hilarious, twisted, and literate, as well as eye-opening for the heretofore uninformed.

Steam candle creation

This video will teach you how to build a steam candle. A fast and hands on way to get the concept on steam power.

Robot Ride

These guys hooked a car seat to a robotic arm and decided to take a ride on it. They should have more rides like this at the theme parks and county fairs.

The Hawking Paradox

A documentary about the universe and Stephen Hawkings' role in understanding it.

Waves in a Large Free Sphere of Water

A beautiful series of demonstrations using a sphere of water in low gravity and various perturbations. Lovely.

Soundwaves

Experiment in visualizing soundwaves.

Edvard Munch

This was very well compiled. I felt like I was almost on the edge of my seat waiting for the moment that "Scream" was shown. Love the way they contrasted Munches types of painting, gave a startling emotional impact. What a ride.

PROOF! Science is wrong! Christians are Right!

A few things scientists don't want to admit about their "theories" of evolution and gravity which have been disproven by some simple demonstrations from a show that used to be on comedy central.

Number Sequences

This video talks about the relationship between the sequence of squares and the sequence of odd numbers. Good video. It's always nice to see two seemingly different things in mathematics actually having a very close relationship (ex. integration and differentiation).

Jon Stewart owns CNN

You've got to love Jon Stewart, he is incredible funny. And when he is actually serious, he has got some great points. He is better than Keith Olberman, because he is less biased. He takes swipes at all sides as demonstrated by this video. Spot on! My favourite moment in this clip: "you want to compare your show to a comedy show, be my guest"

Horizon Nuclear Fusion

A scientific claim is put to test and it's found to be false. This is the pure spirite of science that is making advace so fast.

The Uncertainty Principle

Interesting demonstration of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.

E=mc2 - Einstein and the World's Most Famous Equation

A wonderful documentary about one of the most important discoveries. It still strikes me as immensely odd that Einstein, the genius he was, would later turn out to be so wrong about quantum mechanics.

Delivery

This film (about 8 mins long) is absolutely breath-taking. The graphics are amazing - the film is surreal and beautiful and very imaginative.

Terence Mckenna - Schizophrenic or Shamanic?

Terrence McKenna's vision for the entire cosmology of humanity.

Frog Sashimi

I'd never eat it, but it's amazing what people will eat. I feel sorry for the frog and lizard, but especially for the frog. The idea of devouring a beating heart is disturbing, and the frog was killed in a horrible way. I wonder how popular this really is in Japan... Be warned. This is for the strong of stomach and if I wasn't already pretty much a vegetarian then this video might have persuaded me to become one. Basically a frog is skinned alive and its raw heart eaten whilst it is still beating. How anyone could bring themselves to eat this is beyond me.

Do schools today kill creativity? (Ken Robinson, TEDTalks)

Creativity should be given as much priority in our education system as literacy, math, and science. Speaker Ken Robinson asserts that our current system is educating creativity out of our children. An excellent (and humorous) investment of 20 minutes this morning.

Explores the idea of peeling away the restrictions of traditional education in order to uncover humans' innate sense of imagination. Inspired thoughts. Seriously, check out the TED talks on youtube or wherever; All that I've watched so far have been thought provoking at the very least.

Timothy Leary - The man who turned on America

Love him or hate him this is the definitive biography of Dr. Timothy Leary, a man who influenced an entire generation to tune in, turn on and drop out. This is an excellent documentary produced by the BBC. Personally speaking I would say that Tim Leary had a positive effect on my life.

Richard Dawkins' jaw-dropping talk on our bizarre universe

Richard Dawkins discusses the question of limits on human understanding. As a species we evolved to cope with the world within a particular range of physical dimensions. These determine our common sense view of the world. How far can the plasticity of our brains transcend this limitation? I like the levels at which he thinks. I always like people poking up different, interesting and useful interpretations, reexamining assumptions. Plus some of the things he says work rather well with some recent thinking of mine.

I Did Not Speak Up And Now I Wish I Had

Do you remember that line from "V for Vendetta" about the relative positions of governments and people?

Damn Anti-Piracy

Damn Anti-Piracy por Michael Heilemann.
Word. Keeping consumers on the straight and narrow through patronizing fear tactics should be left to the professionals. Like the government. Unfortunately, it works. Which is why they do it.

Paper Calculator

This might be a good way to teach my son math, the simple ones, without the use of a calculator. Plus it looks fun, like crossword puzzles. And it's new for me and the children too.

The point is that math is beautiful, visually this is striking because of the complex perfection of the universe. Now if I could only do this in my head .

My Little Zombie Pony

My Little Zombie Pony por dbx1.

Fucking awesome.

Muslims in America

This is an ABC experiment about Muslims. It shows the good, the bad, and the ugly. A very interesting piece from mainstream news media. I know what I would do and it saddens and angers me that more people did not stand up. EVERY person has inherent worth and dignity and deserves to be treated with respect.

Market for Ni$$as

Awesome poetry by Talaam Acey about how RAP has sold out and degraded the black community. Good analysis of the 'gangsta rap' genre. It's been said before but its nice to see a passionate poet say it.

Batteries powered by water

A Japanese inventor unveils what he calls the "next generation of eco-friendly energy sources" - batteries powered by water. Suzuki says these batteries would be cheap to produce and can be recycled several times, making them an essential tool for the future.

It is an amazing invention that would never be allowed to see the light of day in the USA.

Solar power from printable ink

Amazing solar powered printable ink, the way of the future for renewable energy.

Iron ball falls in sand (slowmotion style)

Oh, slow-motion physics videos, where have you been all my life?

Noam Chomsky on Human Destiny

As the Presidential election draws near, won't you give a few minutes to listen to and ponder about what Noam Chomsky is saying. I think you'll find it time well spent.

Dishmaker

To lazy to wash your dishes? Don't worry, get a DISHMAKER! This is way better than a dishwasher.

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Fano Flow

Very cool display of what non-newtonian fluids do.

Superfluid

A brief summary of some of the properties of superfluids along with video clips of helium as a superfluid. Amazing, but I want the rest of the video. I feel like there is much more info that I would like to hear about.

Alien Planet

A 90 minute program which looks at a futuristic scenario that takes place perhaps 100 years in the future. Based on science and punctuated by interviews with the top scientists and engineers of today, this program explores in a realistic manner the first extra solar space mission to an earth type planet. Very well done with excellent CGI.

FDA Approves First Self-Contained Artificial Heart

It is an excellent video about the heart. It provideas the structural overview of the heart. It proved extremely useful to me.

Richard Dawkins on Shaw TV with Fanny Kiefer

The more I listen to Richard Dawkins the more ignorant and closed minded religion seems. He is absolutely right when he says that were children taught to disagree and disbelieve, to understand for themselves, then religion would die out. I have no doubt of this. The proof is in atheists everywhere. I myself was brought up to find the truth for myself, and albeit my whole family are either die-hard christians or catholics, i am atheist.

Sam Harris makes a joke and a point

Sam Harris giving the super-naturalist some perspective on how lame-ass the explanation of god provided is.

Net Neutrality Open Source Documentary

Net neutrality - given that traditional media have done little to highlight the extreme issues, environmental, social and moral of our time - it is important that the net does not become 'controlled', as this will lead to it becoming just another medium of to tell you it's all just hunky dorry.

Secret Seats on Airplanes

I'll have to remember this. Good information, especially considering how companies aren't paying for business class tickets any longer. A great video with some really great tips on getting some of the best seats on an airplane when traveling. I'll be sure to use this info the next time I'm flying somewhere!

Mainstream Media Commercial

Short, humorous, well written and to the point. Should be compulsory mainstream viewing before the watershed on all channels. But that would contravene freedom of the press. Damn!

Max Headroom WTTW Pirating Incident

"In 1987, Chicago TV channels WGN9 and WTTW-11 were hijacked by this guy wearing a Max Headroom mask. 20 years later, he is still at large.

This is a subtitled version of the original footage, since many people cannot tell what he's saying, this makes it easier."

Beautifully bizarre. I wish more things like this would happen.

Amazing Bass Guitar Player!

Guy has some serious chops. I loved the design of the 5 string bass. I wish the sound was better or at least a bit louder. I liked to have heard the melody he was making. It was clear that he just wasn't popping and slapping for the heck of it.

Wished my fingers worked like that! Too bad about the distortion from either his small amp or my speakers. Bass solos don't usually do much for me, so would love to hear more with a full group.

War on everything: Funny Christian Part

"Ladies, when you're doing laundry, if you're grouchy about it, are you doing laundry in the love of god? Because when you do laundry in the love of god, you can get a harvest." A harvest of...clean laundry?

This video was absolutely hilarious. Especially the last part! I actually laughed until I cried after he pushed the guy in the wheelchair over.

Amazing Art

The complexity of his mind and his work gives me a headache and a nagging feeling of inferiority. A true great artist thinks outside of the box and brings his work to life. Props.

Richard Dawkins reading his hate mail

That church van line made me laugh for a few minutes.

Awesome Graduation Speech

This is the graduation speech that I wish I had been talented enough to make. These guys have guts! And hell they're good! Congrats, for finishing high-school, and for this amusing speech, and the piano of course.

How To Install Invisible Shelves

Nice little trick, you sacrifice a book to use as a shelf and then stack other books on top of it. It looks like you have invisible shelves!

The Illusion of reality

Very good documentary about quantum mecahnics, how the ideas about atoms and subatomic particles developed during the last 100 years and most importantly, about the various interprerations. The maths are there, but no one knows, not even vaguely, what it means.

The Fourth Dimension

Carl Sagan does a wonderful job of describing the 4th dimension in an imaginative and interesting manner. Sagan was a brilliant astrophysicist and very creative when it came to explaining complex ideas in understandable terms.

Cool video showing what you can do with some copper wire, a magnet and an AA battery.

Mirror test shows magpies arent so bird-brained

New research shows that magpies can recognise themselves - the first time this has been shown in non-mammals.

Nokia Morph Concept

I hate advertising with a passion, because usually its selling false happiness or sudo-science. That said, Nokia just got a point in my book. This is the kinda stuff that makes me excited for future technologies.

Clifford Stoll

I never found the TED talks very interesting, but this one is AWESOME. Clifford Stoll wrote 'The Cuckoos Egg', its a great read for anyone interested in computer security.

"The first time you do something, it's science. The second time, it's engineering. The third time, you're just a technician." Clifford Stoll, former hacker hunter, on why he isn't interested in computer security anymore.

Richard Alpert

A wonderful 7 minute clip of Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), talking about LSD. There is a wealth of intelligent commentary here. I enjoyed the comments on how our competitive social structures, which promote antagonism between various groups and nations, are throwbacks to our time in the jungle, where resources were scarce, but have no place any more in a modern world of abundance. There is enough to go round, and it is time for a change of perspective.

The Worlds First Real Gauss Rifle

I saw this in the MAKE magazine and they show you how to make it for less than 30 bucks. Pretty spiffy...

Yellow Drum Machine

Great little yellow drumming robot! Imagine a whole heap of these on stage, its like boot dancing for robots. In regards to hobbyist robotics, this is the greatest idea I've seen in a long time.

Street Art: Joshua Allen Harris Inflatable Bag Monsters

Street art with a twist. These sculptures are made of plastic bags and such and are inflated by air coming from subway. They rise, look quite lifelike for a moment and then just.. die. Quite inspiring.

What is Moores Law

Moore's Law (constant doubling) explained in a very understandable way. I feel like I could explain it now too. That's the best compliment I can give to anything educational.

Idea + square = origami

If you thought origami was about folding paper into swans or flapping birds, then this is going to blow you away! The most amazing & intricate origami figures ever made.

Bizarre Ant Fungus Makes Heads Explode!

Head asplode. If you know anything about the internet (leik totally) you've seen invasive-neurological-attacks-on-insects videos before, but this one has the best photography of the ones I've seen.

Rubber hand illusion

"Watch how you can trick your brain by stroking a fake rubber hand and your real hand at the same time".

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Alice

A strangely compelling electronica song (and video) composed of sounds from the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland. Made by a 19-year-old in Australia, "Alice" kind of lulls you into a state of semi-consciousness filled with Cheshire cats and flowers wielding batons.

That was so hypnotic, I could listen to it on loop for a week and not get bored of it. The rhythms, the loops and the samples add up to a stunning sound.

Derren Brown - "Paying with Paper"

Derren Brown appears to use a combination of confusion techniques, metaphor, and embedded commands to run a scam where he pays for items with blank paper.

I'm usually skeptical, but this one blew my mind. The people who say that if you try this enough times you'll eventually succeed, are missing the point. He bought a $4500 piece of jewelry for a few sheets of blank paper. C'mon! That's impressive by any measure.

Short Circuiting of Nitinol

Interesting material that when heated returns to a preset shape. This being a spring.

The Redneck Rocket Launcher

I found it hard to believe that no rednecks were harmed in the filming of this video...

Learn quantum physics the way it was meant to be taught. By a cartoon.

Amazing video about the law of attraction in quantum physics. If there's more in this series, I certainly want to see them. I would have loved something like this as a kid.
